A young budding photographer asked me about all the forums, photography coaching programs and facebook groups out there.
And he asked about mine. Why should mine matter in a sea of intense competition, and in a changing industry.
My reply is simple. I have my own philosophy that I bring to the game.
Largely, this is business based. With a heavy dose of reality. I know that photographers are prone to letting their egos lead them around like a water buffalo dragged by a nose ring.
To me it’s a business first. I am a marketer of photographic services. Photographer second. I might someday switch those around. (I am in no way wanting to disrespect those who are in it for the pure love of photography. I get it)
I just happen, at this time in my life, and the last forty years. to be in it for the money. Sorry if that offends. I need to make money. Ask my wife about this.
It’s why I follow, signed up for and am a long time student of the likes of Dan Kennedy. No nonsense. No fluff. No hype. Just common sense and profit first.
I’ve had people pitch me some bizarre ideas….things like 3D prints, scenics, sunsets or some other strange/cool way to create portraits. I always, always ask: “Can I sell this? Is there a market for it?”
Unless I can take it to the bank, I’m not interested.
At a night owl mastermind event a few years ago in Nashville a lady in my audience complained about her conservative small town and their fear of boudoir photography.
She was looking for answers. I suggested she move. She laughed and others did too.
But she knew her situation was untenable. Sometimes you gotta move to the a richer market. Sometimes you gotta find another product. That’s a simple fact of life in business. It is what it is.
Where’s the market? Find it.
That my friend is the main difference. I take the business of photography and running a profitable business with my photography skills very, very serious.
It’s why I started the Photography Collective. A team of like minded profit centered souls. The Photography Collective
