I can be such a dick at times. I can’t help it. I mean well, but stuff comes out of my mouth and before I can edit….boom! Too late. I said it. It’s out there in the universe.
I’m going straight to hell.
Case in point, a few weeks ago, a long time buddy of mine sez this to me, in response to another buddy’s comment about something completely unrelated:“When you grow up Rob you’ll start shooting in RAW too…”
He thought he was being funny by putting me down. You know, sometimes people, friends, do that. It’s all good.
I sarcastically quipped: “I made way more money last year shooting JPG’s… bla bla” The rest matters not. I’m ashamed at what I said. (even though it was true…:)…)
I instantly apologized. I felt bad. I still do. It’s not like me. (actually it is….)
But there’s a nugget of truth in my sentiment.
It’s this:
Don’t start nagging, shaming, pointing out my situation when you are not in the same boat. Fact is, you work full time. And shoot part time. I, on the other hand, work full time as a photographer.
Like they say in Texas… “It ain’t braggin if you can do it.”
I don’t like bragging. It never looks good. Not even humble bragging.
However, there’s something to be said about being able to teach, share, ‘splain and coach photographers BASED ON ACTUAL truth. Meaning, what I do in my studio.
I know. I sounded like a dick. And I apologized about nine times. Sometimes my brain gets away on me.
Another thought that was being thunked during all this was this.
(I thought this, but said it not!)….
“This is why you’re still a part time photographer with a full time job…”
I kept it to myself. I like having friends.
Anywho, I like learning from real photographers, like me, who are in trenches, full time, fighting the good fight and making moolah.
This is why I started a brand new series called the
Photographers Mastermind Collective.
I didn’t have to look far to gather this band of legendary badasses and warriors.
Our first in this series is in the books. Thursday, Feb 20

Hey Rob
2020 marks my 40th year in business, the portrait business. Full time, never having to work part time or drive an UBER, or God forbid “get a real job” to make ends meet.
I’ve never considered myself a photographer or an “artist”. I have always considered myself a “businessman” or “marketing man” that makes his living doing and selling portraiture. I put my time and money into education and not buying the latest gear.
Oh, and only shoot JPGs. too. 🙂
Love you Rob, you always inspire me.

I get asked on a regular basis from part time photographers on what they could do to become a full-time photographer. I give them strategies to employ, ways to think differently and try to fuel their enthusiasm. Months go by and they have done nothing, zero to further their goals. The passion just isn’t there.
Most times now talking people I can tell within minutes if they have the passion to make it or not. When you want to become a success at something you need to eat breathe sleep it 24/7 until it happens. Every ;day you need to do something that furthers your goals. Doing a little here, and a little there every few weeks will not make it work.
The fulltime photographer is a ;dying breed, only the strong will survive.
