I am not a good photographer. Also, I am not a good public speaker. I used to be really, really bad in fact.
But I got better.
Sometimes I can knock it out of the park.
Sometimes I miss more pitches than not. At least that’s the way I see it.
I am able to speak with a fair amount of confidence in public because I’ve honed these skills. My skills evolved beyond the technique.
What drives this?
One of my favorite activities in public speaking, and in photography are what we called in Toastmasters, evaluations.
In photography competitions they’re called critiques.
This is my super power. I know what a good speech sounds like.
I know what a good photograph looks like. We all do, don’t we?
Or do we?
For those who struggle with this, let me explain.
A good speech, like a good photograph, has impact.
It moves us. It captivates. It’s instant and needs very little thought. No need to analyze.
It’s that simple.
One of the best things you can do for your personal growth AND your business is the skilled art of public speaking. I can’t recommend this enough.
Also, one of the best things you can do for your photography business is print critiques. This will, for those brave souls who are open and honest, help your marketing and profits. Bottom line!
On May 4th, 2021 we’re hosting our weekly NoBs Photo Buzz with special guest James Hodgins and yours truly as you print judges.
