“Marketing is fun, once you get it…”
This line that James quipped keeps buzzing around in my head from last February’s Marketing Mastermind when James Hodgins joined me in this epic event.
There is a lot of truth to it, and hard to express to many small business owners, photographers included.
Thinking and acting in terms of strategy, is the BIG mind switch.
When you see how what you are selling, pitching and promoting is best served up when you package, bundle and offer your goods to the right market, this moment is equal to when say a four year old first masters the art of tying their shoes.
Or a 16 yr first learns how to drive a car.
Or a child first learns how to ride a bike.
C’mon, you know that feeling. When you “got it!”. The universe comes together in a chorus of angelic singing and a whole new paradigm shift happens.
For life. Once there, there ain’t no turning back. You never forget.
Then why is is so hard for so many NOT to get it? There are many reasons…pride, ego, stubbornness and stupidity being some of the top reasons. Fears, anger and a misguided sense of self-importance ranking a close second.
This isn’t rocket science. If it were, more people would be doing it. 🙂
In fact, rocket science is more black and white, measurable and reliable. Complicated, yes. But a hard science nevertheless.
Marketing is NOT a hard science. It’s a blend of art and science. This is likely the ultimate reason why so many don’t get it. And it’s driven by humans. Humans are complex. Humans make up the ‘market’ in marketing.
The main force that drives it is the market itself. (d-uh, of course).
I’ve said it and thunk it a million times. Worth repeating: No Market….No Business.
James sez he learned marketing from me. Ok, fine. But truth be told, I credit him for being open to the idea. He is and was a good student. He has the bruises on the back of his head to prove it.
And he appreciates the number one force that matters more than cameras, lenses, photoshop techniques or lighting: Marketing.
I keep hammering the marketing message. And this Thursday will do more of the same. Join me….
And if you happen to be near Oakville, ONT, on June 2, 2019….Join Maggie and yours truly for a one day Marketing Summit.
Let’s learn to ride that bike together!
