Some like to hang onto excuses. The biggest one of the last 15 years (to explain lack of sales and profits) is the whole shoot-and-burn phenom.
How I make money with fairy photography and 5 trends I refuse to follow…
If you know me you know I always ask the big question:
Will it succeed and turn a profit somehow?
Mastermind…how to choose the best samples for your studio walls….
Friends in photography, NObs photo success member Hark Nijar asked for help choosing images for his new studio walls. I, as usual, love turning just about any topic into a webinar. And that's exactly what I did. We'll talk about his wall samples, the importance of using best practise when choosing samples, and other questions re: marketing, growing and expanding a new thriving photography business. August 2019 Lighting Mastermind is up…
Diversity…a buzzword you hear all the time. It plays into my business considering the variety of photography sessions that flow into my life.
For me it’s not a buzzword or an ideology, but a reality.
You may have heard me say my photography business is like a Swiss Army knife. This business model is a reality because I need to, well, make money.
This is not a hobby. It’s a business.
[Read more…]The best critique is not from a photographer, it’s from your market.
Someone asked me to critique their work. I replied: “The best critique is not from a photographer, it’s from your market.”
I don’t mind offering critiques. They have a place. They often help us become better photographers. And we win awards when entering competitions. These feel good displayed around our necks and on our walls.
The end goal, the way I see it, isn’t awards, medals or trophies. I do have my fair share of those. Most of which now in storage. Frankly, I am at the point where I no longer care for them.
I need to make money. Not win awards or impress my peers. This may sound harsh to some. (not sure why it would, since we all need to make money).
And to those who have a main source of income, you may not ever understand the financial pressures, the 3:00AM anxieties, the stress and month to month payments that need to be made, all of which I earn from my photography business.
ALL. 100%
Selling and marketing in business is hard and aking money takes guts and courage.

A slow, easy, patient, feeding just the right amount of fuel to the fire to see of it will catch…
Bootstrapping. Innovating. Plunging into new markets.
I love sitting around the kitchen table and chatting about new ideas,
promotions, strategies and markets.
The temptation to getting off track is real….and one of the biggest mistakes is throwing money at an idea because we’re anxious, impatient.
I was chatting with a local photographer about this very idea. How I loved creating business this way. And, to be honest, one of my superpowers is the ability to determine how much to throw at an idea to see if it has life, without going overboard and over budget or becoming impatient and unrealistic in expectations.
The “Golden Griddle” effect and other obvious reasons why businesses succeed in spite of a crap product…
I’m on fire.
Last week I wrote about the Books & Beans Effect, and the “Anvil Effect”, and other obvious reasons why businesses fail.
These, as mentioned, are influences that I’ve observed over the years. And am now sharing my infinite wisdom with you, my eager and passionate friends in photography & business.
