Paninis with my favorite photographers…

October 8, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

“Where should we go for lunch with John?” I asked James.

“That panini place downtown…”

“Ok, see you there..”

Had lunch last week with James and John. I’ve known them both for at least two decades, both still full time photographers.

Not just dudes with cameras and tech. But real, legit photographers still making a living, hard cold cash, in their respective fields photographers.

James Hodgins (many of you know him- one of the best lighting masterminds with James is in the forum for members HERE) is a niche photographer well known and respected in the industrial and mining niche.

John, a grad photographer, who is loved and respected so much at the local university they are building him a studio to shoot out of. No more temporary class room studios for this guy.

How cool is that?

Yes, they do need him to shoot the occasional gig for the school. But he always gets paid. Sweet deal.

Can you still make a living running a professional photography business? Granted, it’s not as easy as it used to be, with everyone a photographer nowadays.

But possible, yes. More than ever marketing plays a key role. And choosing the right market. (which is really a marketing thing when you think about it)

You create a market that is virtually impenetrable by outside competition, you end up working in a vacuum.

Choose wisely and cherish, nurture and work your niche.

It’s too valuable to take chances on.

Whenever we get together we have a blast. The conversation centers around friendly gossip, local happenings, how awesome our wives are and mainly on making money.

Me likey.

Truth be told, John is a bit of a recluse. He may hurt me for talking about him in this email. He keeps to himself, his business and his wife & two adult kids.

But he’s a good guy, successful and we are simpatico.

It’s a rare thing these days to hang with real photographers. Not to disrespect photographers who are into the craft for the passion and love. I get that. Totally.

But for guys like me, it’s refreshing to hang with those whose lives depend on bringing home the proverbial bacon with our cameras and our skills.

It’s why I love hosting marketing masterminds online. I think it’s the coolest thing ever to be able to login, and chat with other successful photographers from all over the world.

Sharing and brainstorming quality marketing and success strategies.

Couldn’t do that 20 years ago. You had to fly, drive or crawl to an event.

Pay a ton of dough and sit through the crowded convention hall with hundreds of other sweaty photographers.

🙂

Last week I had a meeting, sans panini, with Ohio photographer Paul Floyd. Paul talked many ideas and also about his recent 16 page senior mailed to 3,000 homes. Crazy, I know. Old school.

But it works. Paul’s presentation is HERE for members. (Among hundreds of other replays.)

Join us, won’t you? The paninis are warm and tasty.

“Wow! She is such an incredible inspiration….”

August 20, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

Laura emailed me last week, the day after we had Nancy Tillberg give us her follow up presentation (we had her on last winter talking about her specialty: High Volume Boutique photography…)

“Loved the webinar with Nancy Tillberg. Wow! She is such an incredible inspiration. I hope she comes out with either a book or a program for photographers on her 3-tier model program. It is something I have thought about for a long time, especially working with the younger gals, to build up role model teens in the culture. Thank you for such an inspirational webinar! In joy,

Laura J…”

That presentation was open to everyone, but the replay
is available only for members HERE

NOTE: Wednesday, August 22, at 8:00PM I am running the monthly Lighting Mastermind presentation.

All are welcome. REPLAY HERE

I’ll be showing my examples from real money making sessions using the the Godox flash system and my on going love affair with this brand. Including weddings, executive sessions and more. This system is amazing!

Also, studio portraits, in living colour promo, studio grad sessions, studio and on location prom dress……and more to come….

Dirty Secret

August 8, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

When I was a kid I was obsessed with cars, chemistry sets and climbing things.
You name it, I’d climb it.

When I was a teenager I was obsessed with music, beer, weed and girls…and regular run-ins with the law.

Then I entered my twenties and it was personal development, business and marketing.

And I was always shy to boot. A lot of people are surprised when they hear this about me.

I tell them it’s my dirty secret. I also tell them that the experiences I had in life, good and bad, are what made me. For better or worse.

That we need to get over the shame, blame and game playing and move on, build a life today. Not live in the past.

When I look back at my life I can see where creativity was working for me. Even if I were getting in trouble.

Creativity was never stifled or programmed out of me. Good thing.

Creativity, a dash of passion and dose of courage pushed me forward into running my own business.

I was always grateful I never turned too far down the wrong road in life. It could have happened.

I was horribly insecure and shy. But I had enough ambition and balls to stay the course.

Being in business is holistic. I look at the whole picture now. The mind, soul and spirit.

Balance is key. I understand that hard work is very important. But, doing the wrong type of work could throw me off course.

Doing too much, too much of the wrong work would really push me down a rabbit hole.

Truth is, I have an addictive personality. Who doesn’t?

And I need to keep an eye on myself, stay the course and push for balance.

But I do love business and marketing. And photography.

What a deadly combination. It’s one of the key reasons why I love hearing stories from other photographers. Whether they are stories of success , struggle or failure….they all teach us.

But we need to be open. And honest. And brave. Facing the shame, the inner dragon, is the biggest challenge of all. With the highest returns.

Let there be light… and let there be profits

Join us and learn, prosper…Lighting Mastermind presentaion

Monday, July 16th at 8:00PM EST… REPLAY HERE

One thing that separates  me from other photography coaches and mentors is the fact that I am in the struggle everyday. Like many of you. I feel your pain, your joy and I like it when we all succeed.

With that success must be profits. Or we’re just playing at a hobby.

When I run a presentation on lighting, I like to show real legitimate money making scenarios from real paying clients. Whenever possible.

Sometimes I find a new or interesting lighting strategie can be evolved into my day to day studio. If not, I ain’t that interested except for rare exceptions like the few times I went out and tried my hand at astro photography for the fun of it. Something cool about being out in the forest at 2:00AM….but it stops there. I have bills to pay.

In that spirit tonight’s lighting mastermind includes a variety of lighting, and posing examples that I will dig into.

Including:

Classic executive headshots on location….

Family portraits on location using the Godox AD 200 and AD600….or, all natural light…

Three brothers…..

Using the Godox high speed sync for executive portraits on location….
and more..

July Mastermind…Join Us

July 12, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

Every month I like to get together to talk lightning strategies. This includes sharing many of the strategies I use in my photography business with real paying clients.

I’ll be updating my new location lighting using the Godox AD 600 and the Godox AD200 on executive portraits outdoors and families on location.

Including….how to make copies clean and deliverable. Boring, but reliable income:

Using the Godox system for on location HSS portraits:

Family sessions with the Godox AD200:

Old school classic executive sessions on location:

Three brothers. Every year mom hires us to photograph her three sons. The oldest is heading off to university, time for another session on location:

One of the BIGGEST screw up I have ever done….and how I dealt with the fading sun and a 3 generation gathering with families from BC to Boston….:

I photographed these guys 20 years ago. Mom and dad are celebrating 60 years married….The Godox AD600 was an amaxin lighting choice for the whole session:

Before I invested in the Godos system I was using the Alien Bee and Vagabond power source:

“Listening to you was calming and realistic. I can do this. I will do this….”

June 18, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

Julie writes….:

“It worked!!!! 😉 I was ready to hang up everything the morning of your webinar. I felt like maybe this was not something I should be doing?? But… Ruth Densley, a good friend of mine told me about your webinar. I thought, what the heck. I have nothing to lose. You lit a fire under my ass. Listening to you was calming and realistic. I can do this. I will do this.

Could you do me a favor? Could you go to my website, look at my stuff. Give your honest CC. Let me hear everything!!!!! I truly value your opinion. Julie”

Thanks Julie. As emailed to you, I created a video where I analyzed your website.

And after asking for permission, I posted the same video in the downloads/replay section from the Secrets to building, creating, selling and promoting Enchanted Fairy, Ice Fairy & Medieval Themed Sessions presentation I ran a few days ago.

In all honesty, I had no idea how it was going to go over. I simply gave it my all. And the response has been very positive.

Your reply from my video (summarized):
“I have never been more excited about my fairies until now. I can’t thank you enough. Julie…”

I’ve always said these are some of the best sessions to create and offer in your photography studio.

How to cheap out on lighting…

May 25, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

SO I’m working on a coffee table book with a local restaurant. This is for a great cause and should give me oodles of exposure, plus a warm fuzzy feeling.

I’m truly honored and excited.

When we sat down to discuss and figure out the details, which are far from figured out, I thought about what style, what look I wanted to bring to this project.

I keep going simple, straight forward, “coming out of the shadows” so to speak. The cause is epilepsy and is way bigger than folks are aware of. That photo below is my first test shoot.

One photographer who’s look inspired me is Chris Knight.

You may recall this young dude. I interviewed him a few months ago.

I also reviewed his book HERE

I swiped his look, so to speak, best I could. Simple, clean, powerful.

EXCEPT….(you knew that was coming, didn’t you….)…except I used a $6. LED light from the hardware store. Not a million dollar profoto what’s it called light thingie.

ME thinks it works. Again, see image above. The graphic designer who I am also working with loves it. All is good.

I talk in greater detail on my el cheapo approach, as well as an update on using the Goddox AD200 in the field on portrait and wedding shoots, and some of the limitations and complications arising from this amazing little light.

All that and more in the replay of the May 2018 Lighting Mastermind HERE for members

Non members can watch the replay HERE

See you on the inside.

How to grow a healthy and profitable product and photography business.

April 26, 2018 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

A recent quote from one of my favorite marketing philosophers, Seth Godin:
“If I listened to feedback, I would have quit on the first day.”

Problem is, this is only half true.
See, I’ve seen many photographers take my fairy success system and grow a healthy and  profitable product.
I’ve seen others fail dismally.
Why? In my best estimation and what appears to be brain dead obvious, the core product was the problem.
The work they produced was, well, crap. Let’s call it what it is.
The solution? Ask for feedback. Duh….but alas, none came.
Failure followed soon.
The goal here is to always build, create and pitch a product, that, once ready for the market, the market wakes up and says: “I want some of that! Where do I sign up.”
My clients trip over themselves when I run fairy day, medieval day, ice fairies and similar marketing promotions. All built on the same basic pattern. All built on a good product.
The core structure is the same. Come up with a product, an offer. Schedule a time. Let em know you’re there. Book em. Sell em. Everyone wins.
I’ve done this over and over and over. Rinse, repeat.
And I talk about this ad infinitum in my mastermind meetings and on going tutorials.
All you gotta do is listen. And act. I’ve posted a few sample images throughout this rant. This is what I do…..
