The size of the camera gear used is inversely proportional to the talent of the photographer…

April 9, 2018 By Robert Provencher 1 Comment

I teach a photography 101 class through the local library in our city. I actually enjoy it. So do the attendees. Go figure.

I tell them I am not going to teach them everything they need to know about their cameras and all about the tech talk owners manuals stuff.

That, I remind them, will leave them way more confused then when they started.

What I do teach them is the basics of exposure, and we dig hard and deep into seeing light.

And composition.

See, the way I see it, learning basics of ISO, aperture and shutter speeds, in other words, exposure, and learning how to see LIGHT, and understanding how composition works, are the most valuable and important foundations of what I remind them is, over and over, what photography is all about: Painting With Light.
Nothing more.

And I drive the point home that it’s NOT the camera.

Case in point….Brian DeMint….that’s him in the image on the left. His story he’s told a million times, is that he bought a basic DSLR at the local Best Buy years ago and started his photography journey.

Hell, he didn’t even know the lens came off. And he’s never been too proud to admit that.

If you look closely at the image to the left you can see Brian’s light. A 12$ garage light from WalMart.

That, and his basic DSLR from Best Buy and he’s mastered some very creative images. See the two below.

Brian knows how to see. And he understands this at a deeper artistic level than most.
I want to be like Brian.

I always love telling my class the Brian Demint story. When I show the images (below) they literally roll back and go whoa! Point made.
That’s why I’ve host numerous webinars and live events where Brian taught us his deepest secrets to seeing.

That, and a seriously twisted offbeat sense of humor.

You can watch my first ever webinar with Brian HERE This is free to all. And it’s very good. Swear words and all.

If you’re a member of noBs photosuccess you can access many more presentations with Brian in the Creative Cross training series HERE

Here’s Brian live at the Nashville Inferno with Brian HERE with his 12 dollar light.

And here’s Brian live at the Toronto Inferno HERE again, with his Walmart lighting.

As I said…..it’s not the camera.

Your clients buy the artist more than the art- A webinar with Thomas Dodd

December 5, 2017 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

Let me send you my best PHOTOGRAPHY MARKETING TIPS-How To Build A Six-Figure Income Photographing babies, children and families. Plus advance notice on marketing, lighting and success webinars.

“The more pictures you see, the better you are as a photographer.”
~Robert Mapplethorp~

Thomas Dodd Wiki entry

Fave podcast: Joe Rogan

Some quotes…..:

“Texture is critical.”

“Model selection is the most important part of an image.”

Have an elevator speech. They buy the artist more than the art. This is influenced by how you present yourself, what you say, how you look. Do you walk in looking like an artist?

This matters: “The way you talk about yourself. The way your work. The way you present yourself.”

Have multiple streams of income.

15% commission paid to affiliates who show his work.

Getting grants for art is all about being a good writer.  Reporters are lazy. They will run with the bio and the press release you give them.

Start small, ascend your way up through the ranks. It’s all about people.

Think like a rick person. They spend money on things they value. Easiest jobs seem to be the ones who pay the most.

Painters are open, photographers not so much. “What is currently popular is on it’s way out.”

Copy right and key word all your online files. Blog twice a week, even if you’re not a good writer.

Think of social media not as promoting, but as sharing.

In an industry where so many of the blind follow the blind, he’s a refreshing voice…

October 13, 2016 By Robert Provencher Leave a Comment

brianDemintFriends in photography,

Brian DeMint is one of my favorite photography peeps.

In an industry where so many of the blind follow the blind,
he’s a refreshing voice.

Why? Mainly because he’s good. Dam good. His artistic shooting skills
are through the roof.

He’s rocket-engineer NASA level smart when it comes
to art. And photography.

He knows how to create a visually stunning, high impact image.
And do it over and over and over again. With bar bones minimal lighting
and props.

Most times he uses a basic kit lens and Best Buy prosumer camera. That, plus whatever
minimal props he can scrounge from the hotel lobby or borrow from someone in the audience.

No fancy cameras or prime 1.8 85MM lenses for this dude.

He proves my point that I’ve been yammering for decades….”It’s ain’t the equipment!”

I see it over and over, this mindset that “when I get that lens or that camera…”

Brian has the ability to see, really see, and he shares this skill with us
all the time.

Every year he’s busy running around giving live shooting demos and he packs
the house with eager fans.

People love him…because he’s real, he’s legit, he’s stratospherically creative, he’s funny
as hell and often, because of the “no filter, foot-in-your-mouth syndrome” (I suffer from this, so we got
sympatico on this one buddy) he says exactly what’s on his mind.

With Brian, you get the whole deal. The whole enchilada. No piecemeal, small portion
served out.

He’s like a tsunami wave of creativity where most are ripples on the lake.

And tonight he’s rocking the boat again in our on going Creative Cross Training….

Join us….9:00PM EST Thursday, October 13th CLICK HERE

If there’s room, you may be able to submit an image or two for Brian to critique (he’s critiquing ten images only!)

See you on the dark side….

Yours in photography and success,
Robert Provencher

I’ve witnessed a few friends who started businesses, and agonized over the set up phase, and
eventually nothing happened. Their ideas and dreams fizzled out.Frustrating. I think they lacked
a BIG vision and thought the details would somehow make it happen.

Food Photography
Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 9.32.35 PM

I’ve been considering for a while getting into food photography.  When
I shoot weddings, one of my favourite parts of the day is the details and
the food … photographing it, I mean ?   As a result of that, I’ve been asked
by several venues to photograph their property and one of them was a restaurant
so they prepped all of their meals for me.  It’s quite satisfying to see their website
setup with 90% of my photos …

If you’re into food photography, jump in and share who inspires you!

A Little Help…

“Did this Volleyball team shot on Tuesday night and had issues with
the speedlite on the right side of the image.
Batteries weren’t recycling as fast as the one on the left.
This meant the right side of the team is in the shadows a bit.
As these things go with 14-15 year old girls, this is the only shot
where they are all looking at the camera. Is there a
way to “lighten up” the right side of the image?”
